The Advent calendar offers a countdown to one of the most exciting days of the year - Christmas Day.

It's tradition every day to open a new door on the calendar and find a little chocolate or other treats. a practice that many families like to participate in. The psychology behind the Advent calendar is interesting. Intrigue, excitement, expectations, reward & completion are all things that children experience as they countdown to Christmas.

Counting down the days builds anticipation. Anticipation is huge. ITS CHRISSSTMAAASS! But as children how can we contain all this excitement? How can we possibly focus on anything else? As strange as it sounds, Advent Calendars help us to do just that. By providing a little excitement each day.

But despite decades of eating little chocolates from behind cardboard doors, we've probably never asked ourselves this question before: where did the idea originate? And what does the word "Advent" mean?

"Advent" comes from the Latin word adventus, meaning "coming."  - it's a time to get excited about Christmas and to prepare for Jesus' coming.

The Advent calendar is a tradition that originated in Germany and has evolved, with calendars over recent years offering more luxury items than just messages and chocolates.

Initially, people would mark the days of Advent by either burning a candle or drawing on their walls with chalk. They would also hang devotional images every day.

In the early twentieth century, printed calendars began to appear. Gerhard Lang created the modern Advent calendar by adding small doors with bible verses behind them.

(That's a little nugget you can use to make you sound sophisticated at the dinner table this Christmas!)

Over recent years the Advent calendars have evolved into something other than hidden chocolates behind the doors, and they now offer audiences treats like beauty products, jewelry, and much more
